Organic Chemistry 2

Application of common analytical techniques (mass spec, IR and NMR spectroscopy) used in organic chemistry. Topics include properties, reactions, synthesis and mechanisms of the following functional groups: alcohols, ethers, aromatics, ketones, aldehydes, amines, and carboxylic acids. Three class hours, three lab hours. Spring only. Prerequisite: CHE 201.

Subject Code: CHE

Course Number: 202

Credits: 4

Lecture Hours 3

Lab Hours: 3

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Describe the theory of selected analytical techniques (mass spectrometry, IR spectroscopy and NMR spectroscopy).
2. Interpret a mass spectrum, identifying a possible compound with its associated fragment peaks.
3. Predict the major features of its proton NMR spectrum, given a chemical structure.
4. Determine the compound structure using the chemical shifts, splitting patterns and integrations shown in a proton NMR spectrum.
5. Determine the structures of unknown organic compounds by combining the information from NMR spectra, IR spectra and mass spectra.
6. Identify whether compounds are conjugated or aromatic and describe how this impacts their reactivity and the associated reaction mechanism.
7. Draw the mechanisms for selected reactions (alcohols, ethers, dienes, aromatics, ketones, aldehydes, amines, and carboxylic acids).
8. Predict products or design syntheses for selected reactions (alcohols, ethers, dienes, aromatics, ketones, aldehydes, amines, and carboxylic acids), including stereochemistry and regiochemistry information.
9. Name and describe physical properties of selected compounds (alcohols, ethers, dienes, aromatics, ketones, aldehydes, amines, and carboxylic acids).
10. Document in a lab notebook the relevant information used in preparing for, performing and reviewing a lab experiment.
